My Article for Artists Open Houses

A open houseTwice a year Artists in Brighton open their houses or studios to the public for a festival called Artists Open Houses. It’s a tradition that’s been going on in Brighton for 32 years and grows year on year. It’s a unique way for artists to show off their latest work in an informal exhibition setting and meet collectors to tell them about their creations. Over 100 houses open during the May Brighton festival overseen by the Brighton based organisation called Artists Open Houses or AOH for short. Open Houses include art in all its forms including art, photography, illustration, jewellery, ceramics, sculpture and much more. I’ve taken part in Brighton’s Artists Open Houses for 4 years now and love the whole concept.

During a Twitter chat called #brightonhour recently I was asked if I had taken part in Brighton’s Artists Open Houses to which I replied, in Tweet form, ‘yes’.

An email conversation ensued the upshot being that I was asked to write a piece for the Artists Open Houses website. In it I would give my advice to any artists thinking of taking part in artists open houses or for new artists that are exhibiting for the first time. I was honored to be asked and very happy to share my experiences with new and potential exhibitors on the AOH website so I got writing.

Elizabeth Anne Norris-001If you’d like to find out what my top tips for artists were my article is published here for anyone who wants a read. Did I do ok? Let me know in a comment below.

Now it’s time for me to prepare for my own Christmas Artists Open House show at Mews Art Studio. I’m exhibiting along side 10 of my fellow studio artists in our working studio. It’s a rare chance to buy direct from artists where they design and make their work. We’ll be open every Saturday and Sunday from 12-6pm for 3 weekends, starting 29 November 2014. Click here for full details and to see our new Website.

Do you live in Brighton or near by? Want to come along to my Artist Open House? Click here for all the details or see the flyer below by Charlie Doodle.

Can you help? What is Etsy?

by Bluebird Jewellery

by Bluebird Jewellery

When I speak to my friends in the UK they say ‘what is Etsy?’ This is simply no good. Etsy is brilliant and they SHOULD know about it, so should you. So my mission for today is to spread the word about Etsy especially to people in the UK.

If you don’t know about Etsy take a look for yourself and see if you agree? If like me you think Etsy is just fab then all I ask is that you pass this link on to some friends and ask them to do the same. If you’ve received this post via  friend then the likelyhood is that they know about Etsy and agree with me and they want you to spread the word too.

 So what is Etsy?

Etsy is a worldwide online shop for all things ‘handmade’ and ‘vintage’. There are some absolutely gorgeous items on the site and you could quite easily adorn yourself, family and home from top to bottom and be the envy of your friends. It’s the perfect place for birthday and wedding gifts too. Etsy has become very popular in the USA and no doubt it will in the UK too once word gets out.

Everyone knows Ebay, well Etsy has lots of similarities but it only sells handmade accessories, art, bags, purses, bath & beauty, books, zines, candles, ceramics, pottery, childrens items, clothes, crochet, dolls, minatures, furniture, geekery, glass, housewares, jewellery, knitting, music, needlecraft, paper goods, patterns, plants, edibles, quilts, supplies, toys, vintage, wedding gifts, woodwork. Sounds good doesn’t it !

Shopping is fun and can be done in several ways. You can search by colour, category, search terms, featured sellers, by Etsy treasuries (these are favourited items in stylish easy view panels), you can even take the etsy time machine and see historic items as they are addes to the site. You can also shop local by using http://www.etsy.com/local

In a similar way to Ebay, sellers can easily upload items and set up a shop for their handmade wares. And in the same way as Ebay, buyers can use the search tool, use paypal/ credit cards facilities to purchase items. Buyers leave feedback (like Ebay) so that sellers can build up a good reputation for all to see.

By the way I don’t work for Etsy but I do make handmade and use Etsy. I also believe handmade is something special. Please spread the word.
