Design Inspiration – To hear the Artist Speak

There is nothing more inspirational than hearing Artists talk passionately about their work. I was lucky enough to hear 3 inspirational Artists talk on Saturday at ‘High Skies’ Artists Talks and Demonstrations at the Oriental Hotel, Brighton. Each Artist who is currently exhibiting in ‘High Skies’ explained the ideas, inspiration and techniques behind their work.

Firstly Keith Pettit, designer, signmaker, illustrator, wood engraver, wood & letter carver and sculptor, demonstrated the skillful art of wood engraving.

He invited us all to have a go. I can tell you it’s very different from metal engraving although you are using the same tools. He was a very good teacher and extremely knowledgeable in his field.

Then I gave a quick insight into the process behind producing my enamel wall panels using Riso Screens.

Next up was Mark Greco who showed us his passion for birds and the screen print process. I really liked the fact Mark purposefully incorporates the imperfection of handmade screen printing into his pictures.

To round off the afternoon of very interesting talks Graphic Designer Sam Harris gave us the insider info on how he creates his cute Round Birds. I can’t decide if the robin or the green woodpecker is my favourite?

It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and I look forward to future exhibitions and talks like this.
